47 7. Stadtkirche The Stadtkirche (town church) with its 72m high tower rises up on the western hill of the town, a counterpoint to the Castle. The late Gothic building replaces a Romanesque church built around 1200 that preceded it, its capacity no longer deemed sufficient for the prosperous town. In 1473, the town contracted the master builder of Bern’s Minster, Niklaus Birenvogt, known as the ‘stonemason of Bern’, and commissioned him to build the town church. Over the next two decades, the three-nave basilica with vaul- ted long choir, high front tower and two side chapels was built under his direction. A mighty edifice for a town with just under 1000 inhabitants at the time. The church show- piece is the late Gothic rood screen (a partition element), hewn from sandstone around 1511. Originally erected in front of the choir, it was moved to the west in 1867 where it has served as an organ loft ever since. The fire of 1865 destroyed the spire of the church tower. The restoration and reconstruction work was completed in 1868, but met with criticism from experts. In 1950, renovation work on the church began both inside and outside, removing some of the neo-Gothic elements incorporated in the 19th century. The rood screen, for its part, was not moved back. 8. Parish house Opposite the church is the rectory, built in 1727, a volu- minous baroque building under a steep hipped roof. Right next to it is a 13th century half tower that is well worth a visit in order to get an impression of the town’s former fortifications. 9. Municipal library In 1858 the former Hotel Emmenhof was acquired by the civiccommunity(Burgergemeinde)asaschoolandorphanage. The stately building with its gable roof is attributed to the architect Robert Roller, who built a number of public and later private buildings in Burgdorf. The building has been used as a municipal library since 1935. The library was founded as early as 1729, one of the first in the whole of the canton of Bern, and for a long time it was located in the Stadthaus. The civic library (Burgerarchiv) has also been housed in the library since 1959. It was extensively renovated and modern- ised in 1994. 7. Die Stadtkirche Als Kontrapunkt zum Schloss erhebt sich die Stadtkirche mit ihrem 72 Meter hohen Turm auf dem westlich gelegenen Stadthügel. Der spätgotische Bau ersetzt eine um 1200 ge- baute romanische Vorgängerkirche, deren Kapazität für die prosperierende Stadt nicht mehr auszureichen schien. 1473 schloss die Stadt mit dem Berner Münsterbaumeister Nik- laus Birenvogt, dem «Steinmetz von Bern», einen Vertrag und verpflichtete ihn für den Bau der Stadtkirche. Unter seiner Leitung entstand in den folgenden zwei Jahrzehnten die drei- schiffige Basilika mit gewölbtem Langchor, hohem Frontturm und zwei Seitenkapellen. Ein mächtiger Bau für eine Stadt mit damals knapp 1000 Einwohnerinnen und Einwohnern. Glanzstück der Kirche ist der spätgotische, um 1511 aus Sandstein gehauene Lettner (ein Trennelement). Ursprüng- lich vor dem Chor aufgerichtet, wurde er im Jahr 1867 nach Westen versetzt und dient seither als Orgelempore. 1865 zerstörte der Brand den Helm des Kirchturms. Die Sanie- rungs- und Umbauarbeiten wurden 1868 abgeschlossen, stiessen jedoch auf Kritik aus Fachkreisen. Ab 1950 wurde die Kirche aussen und innen renoviert. Dabei wurden einige der im 19. Jahrhundert eingebauten neugotischen Elemente wieder zurückgebaut. Nicht zurückversetzt wurde hingegen der Lettner.
